Your first semester abroad: what nobody warns you about

Getting the visa is the milestone families celebrate. Surviving the first semester well is what actually decides the value of the whole investment.

Attendance is not a formality. In Malaysia, Bulgaria and North Cyprus, dropping below the published attendance percentage can void your exam eligibility and, in some cases, your student pass. Treat the register as seriously as the exam.

Assessment looks different. Instead of one final exam deciding everything, you will face continuous assessment: quizzes, group projects, presentations and lab reports spread across the term. Students who coast for two months and then try to catch up rarely recover their CGPA — and CGPA is what keeps a scholarship alive.

Part-time work has hard legal limits, and they vary by country. Some destinations allow limited hours during term, others allow none at all on a student pass. Working outside those limits risks the visa itself, so check the rule in your own permit rather than trusting a senior's advice.

Homesickness peaks around week six, usually right after the novelty fades and the first assessments land. The students who settle fastest are the ones who join a club, cook with flatmates and keep a fixed weekly call home rather than talking to Dhaka all day.
